| Carol Mitchell is a novelist, short story writer, and educator. She is from the twin-island Caribbean nation of St. Kitts-Nevis but her roots spread throughout the Caribbean. Her writing focuses on ideas and themes that are inherently Caribbean yet are familiar to humans regardless of their nationality or origin.
She is the author of the novel What Start Bad a Mornin’ (Central Avenue, 2023), the forthcoming short story collection A Good Haunting (Akashic Books, 2026), and nineteen books for children, three published by HarperCollins UK. Her book reviews and short stories have appeared in numerous journals, including Grit and Gravity and The Caribbean Writer. She holds an MFA from George Mason University where she is a Cheuse Center fellow. She is also a fellow (and council member) of the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, and he Newnan Arts Residency, and she is a 2024 Kenyon Review Workshop participant. A dedicated educator, Carol teaches writing and literature at George Mason University in Virginia and conducts adhoc, in-person and online writing workshops for institutions such as The Writers’ Center in Bethesda, The Bocas Lit Festival in Trinidad, and many others. She is best known for her workshops on character development, short stories, revision, and children’s books. In addition to teaching at George Mason, Carol is a managing editor at GMU’s Stillhouse Press, and serves on the advisory board of the Alan Cheuse International Writers’ Center. Carol hosts and produces the Moonshine Murmurs podcast by Stillhouse Press and is currently working on a new novel. |
